Outside of his commitments to Iron Maiden – who recently completed work on their new album ‘The Book of Souls‘ – bassist Steve Harris has explored his early hard rock influences with his side project British Lion.

The band released their self-titled debut album back in 2012, which upon it’s release quickly climbed to No. 3 on the Heatseekers chart. The effort, Harris says, has allowed him to explore new territory that wouldn’t have worked on a new Iron Maiden record.

“I’d say it’s more mainstream rock than metal… and quite commercial… but good commercial,” he said. “There’s all kinds of stuff going on, with nods to The Who and UFO and some classic British rock bands, but it’s not the progressive rock album some might be expecting.”

Dedicated listeners have yet to see the band – which also features vocalist Richard Taylor, guitarists Graham Leslie and David Hawkins and drummer Simon Dawson – head out on the road in support of their debut in some time, but that is set to soon change.

“As Maiden fans know, the band is unable to tour this year so I thought I’d do some British Lion live dates,” Harris explained, announcing that the band will soon be heading out on tour later this year.

Harris says the plan currently is to “make it a full U.K. tour this time round so we could get to places we didn’t get a chance to play during the previous tours. We have a lot of fun doing the British Lion shows and we’re playing clubs again to keep that same vibe and intimacy which the fans seem to love as much as we do.”

The members of British Lion are also planning to introduce a handful of new songs into the set list, presumably from an upcoming album. You can see the full list of dates below, and in the meantime can watch the new British Lion music video for “Eyes of the Young.”
