Tight leather pants. A large assortment of spandex clothing. Glittery scarves and glamorous bracelets. And hair. Lots and lots of hair…both real and of the wig variety. And this was just the assembly of concertgoers, also known as “Fanthers,” here to enjoy a Saturday night of throwback 80’s glam metal with Steel Panther.
Returning to Boise since opening up for Judas Priest in 2015, the fans were in fine spirits on this Saturday night as the Revolution Concert House poured $5.00 “Lemmy’s” while the best heavy metal hits of the 80’s blared from the PA system prior to the shows start.
Rocking out and laughing to Panther tunes such as “Asian Hooker,” “Party Like Tomorrow Is The End of the World,” and “Gloryhole” the Fanthers (equal parts men and women) ate it up. The band member introduction turned stand-up comedy routine full of sexually charged jokes after “Fat Girl (That She Blows)” carried on a few minutes too long and seemed to lull the crowd before the band ripped into the catchy and just-as-humorous “Just Like Tiger Woods.”
And a Steel Panther show wouldn’t be complete with girls on stage. “17 Girls in a Row” afforded two dozen spandex clad Fanthers the chance to share the stage with the band before finishing out the set with their most popular tune, “Death to All but Metal.”
You either get Steel Panther or you don’t. Yes, more often than not, the lyrics (and song titles) are vulgar, sexist, and degrading to pop music (alright, can’t blame them there), but the satirical quartet from Los Angeles are truly great musicians. Their music rivals that of your favorite 80’s glam metal band and then some.
Lead singer, Michael Starr (Ralph Saenz), who sang lead vocals on the criminally unrecognized L.A. Guns‘ E.P. ‘Wasted,’ and guitarist Satchel (Russ Parrish) former lead guitarist for Rob Halford’s solo band Fight, along with bassist Lexxi Foxx (Travis Haley) and drummer Stix Zadinia (Darren Leader) have pedigree. Not only does Steel Panther crank out great music, but they are also entertainers maintaining their 80’s glam metal God personas throughout which keeps the Fanthers, new and old, coming back to their raunchy but fun shows.
