Following months of speculation and years of wishful thinking, fans will witness the reunion between three members of the iconic Guns N’ Roses lineup. Lead vocalist Axl Rose, guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan will appear under the GN’R banner together for the first time in over twenty years as headliners of the 2016 Coachella festival.

The 2016 Coachella festival is scheduled to run across April 15-17 and April 22-24, during which the reunited Guns N’ Roses members will perform two headlining performances. These shows will commemorate the first time since 1993 that Rose, Slash and McKagan have performed together and will most favorably stand as two explosive nights in rock and roll history.

Granted, this isn’t the full-fledged unification of the ‘Appetite for Destruction’ or ‘Use Your Illusion’ incarnations that many longtime listeners have been clamoring for, however the occasion is still very much remarkable for bringing together three quarters of the distinctive Guns N’ Roses lineup. Rumored to round out the GN’R lineup are existing members Dizzy Reed, Chris Pitman, Richard Fortus and Frank Ferrer on keyboards, rhythm guitar and drums, respectively.

Critics and rock advocates alike especially began hoping for a reunion between Slash and Rose when the guitarist revealed that he and the GN’R frontman were on speaking terms last August. “It was probably way overdue, you know,” Slash explained. “It’s very cool at this point. You know, let some of that, sort of, negative… dispel some of that negative stuff that was going on for so long.”

As we previously reported, the opportunity seemed ideal following the departure of guitarist Darren Jay “DJ” Ashba, who left Guns N’ Roses last year in order to concentrate on his work with Motley Crue founder Nikki Sixx in Sixx:A.M., as well as the vacant spot left by Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal following his exit from the band back in 2014.

Previous attempts to reunite the original Guns N’ Roses lineup have been largely unsuccessful; Slash, McKagan, drummers Matt Sorum and Steven Adler came together for the group’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Axl Rose famously refused to take part in the event, however he would invite McKagan to fill in for Tommy Stinson for several shows in 2014.

Guns N’ Roses will be accompanied in the 2016 Coachella lineup by a largely varietal lineup including LCD Soundsystem, Ice Cube, Ellie Goulding, Of Monsters and Men, Calvin Harris and Sia. For more event information, visit the festival’s official website here.
