The Walt Disney Theater of the newly refurbished Dr. Phillips Center of Orlando, Florida might not have been the first place hard rock fans would plan on catching a concert, but when it was an entire evening with Alice Cooper the crowd followed with haste. And if anything, the luscious theater setting only complimented the theatrics that go hand-in-hand with a Cooper performance.

Stepping onstage to a shower of pyrotechnics and the themes of the ‘Welcome to My Nightmare’ staple “The Black Widow,” Cooper and company were in high form, tearing through a set list of staples in “Under My Wheels” and “No More Mr. Nice Guy” before catering to the longtime followers with “Public Animal #9.”

With guitarist and latest attention to the touring personnel Nita Strauss tearing up the stage with high velocity Yngwie-inspired shredding, cascading smoke pillars filled the stage throughout the evening in between renditions of “Billion Dollar Babies” and “Woman of Mass Distraction.” Fans who caught Cooper shows in the past few years expected the anthemic “Feed My Frankenstein” and “Poison” from the latter glam metal years, and appreciated it all the more.

An Alice Cooper concert is always an experience; this evening in Orlando was no different, and since there was no opening act it gave the band time to run through their ‘Raise the Dead’ set. This featured giant tombstones across the stage, each revealing a late rock icon and one of their own classics. For this show, Cooper amazed with an absolutely vicious cover of Motorhead‘s “Ace of Spades” as well as favorites by The Who, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie.

Closing out a generous 22 song set with “Elected,” fans were treated to a brawl between “Donald Trump” and “Hillary Clinton,” which shifted between sharing blows and making out. “Ladies and gentlemen, your candidates!” Cooper declared as confetti and fireworks rained across the stage. Even so this didn’t come across as political; if anything satirical and hilarious.

No two Alice Cooper shows are exactly the same, which is quite the landmark achievement for such a veteran frontman who not only survived the shifting genres of interest across five decades but still delivers a show with his band that rivals the most impressive of rock groups these days.
